On security, both are excellent and independently audited, so that is not what you choose on. 1Password has the nicest apps, the best family management, and the extra secret key. You pay a few dollars a month for that. Bitwarden does everything most people need for free. Our line is simple.
Start with Bitwarden, and switch to 1Password if you find yourself wanting the polish and the family convenience.

For most people, no. Start with Bitwarden. Its free plan covers what almost everyone needs, and the code is open source and independently audited. 1Password is the better product if you want the most polished apps, the extra Secret Key on top of your master password, and family sharing with recovery for a forgotten master password. Both are excellent on security, so that is not what decides it.
What does 1Password cost compared to Bitwarden?
1Password Individual is $3.99 a month, billed as $47.88 a year. Bitwarden is free, and its Premium tier costs $1.65 a month, or $19.80 a year. Those are guide prices on annual billing, last checked August 2026. Monthly billing typically runs 20 to 40 percent higher. 1Password raised its prices in March 2026 and has no free plan, only a 14-day trial.
Is the Bitwarden free plan really enough, or will I end up paying anyway?
For most people it is enough. Unlimited passwords, sync across every device, and passkeys, with no device limit hiding in the fine print. You would pay $19.80 a year for Premium mainly for advanced two-factor options, security reports, 1 GB of encrypted attachments, and emergency access for a trusted contact. Nothing in the free plan is crippled to push you upward.
Which is better for a family, 1Password or Bitwarden?
1Password. Its Families plan is $5.99 a month, or $71.88 a year (checked August 2026), for five members, with shared vaults and recovery when someone forgets their master password. That last feature is the one families genuinely need. Bitwarden can share as well, but the family side is less thought through, so it fits households where everyone happily manages their own vault.
